Lady ‘Jays complete comeback (Girls basketball roundup)

MARSHFIELD — Marshfield rallied from a 10-point deficit to hit the game-winning shot with five seconds to play and beat Pleasant Hope 49–48 on Monday.
Marshfield, which is 8–5 and was second at the Pink & White Tournament, travels to Reeds Spring in the Central Ozark Conference Small Schools Division opener for both teams on Tuesday.
In other games on Monday:
— Hollister received 21 points from JaeLynn Ellison in its 66–57 triumph over Forsyth.
The Lady Tigers received 16 points apiece from Cassandra Kimbrough and Lainie Bishop.
Hollister is 7–4 and begins conference play on Thursday at Springfield Catholic.
— Webb City opened conference play by downing Neosho 65–21.
Kaitlin Jaeger and Kyndal Clark both netted 16 points for the Lady Cards.
— Springfield Catholic beat Aurora 71–45 to improve its record for 4–6.

Hollister captures eighth win (Girls basketball roundup)

MANSFIELD — Hollister was 22-of-25 on its free-throw attempts while winning at Mansfield 64–57 on Tuesday.
The Lady Tigers (8−4) had four players in double figures. JaeLynn Ellison netted 16 points, Lainie Bishop 15, Cassandra Kimrbough a dozen and Becca Felks 10.
In other games on Tuesday:
— Marshfield doubled up Reeds Spring 56–28 in a Central Ozark Conference Small Schools Division contest.
The Lady ‘Jays are 9–5 overall and 1–0 in the COC.

NEOSHO — Neosho nipped Carl Junction 42–40 on Friday.
The Lady Wildcats (3−10) were led by Chanoah Turney’s 13 points.
On Thursday:
— Ozark claimed a 57–27 win over Marshfield on Thursday.
— Springfield Catholic beat Hollister 59–38 in a matchup of Central Ozark Conference Small Schools Division foes.
Lainie Bishop had nine points and Kelsey Kapella and Becca Felks both had eight for the Lady Tigers.

Lady Cardinals No. 1 in Class 5

Webb City’s girls basketball team is atop this week’s Class 4 poll in this Missouri Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association’s state rankings.
The Lady Cardinals are 15–1.
In Class 5, Nixa is 13–2 and ranked No. 2.
The Lady Cardinals and Lady Eagles will meet Feb. 12 at Nixa.
The Central Ozark Conference Large Schools Division is represented in the boys poll by Branson and Nixa. The Pirates are 15–1 and ranked No. 5 in Class 5 and the Eagles are 16–1 record and ranked No. 8 in Class 5.

Webb City downs Springfield Catholic (Girls basketball roundup)

WEBB CITY — Webb City upped its record to 16–1 by beating Springfield Catholic 76–61 on Monday.
The Lady Irish fell to 5–7.

— Hollister fell to Ash Grove 73–63.
The Lady Tigers received 20 points from Lainie Bishop, 12 from Kelsey Kapella, 11 from Becca Felks and 10 from JaeLynn Ellison.

With the win, the Lady Jays improved to 11–6.

Lady Cardinals remain No. 1, Nixa stays at No. 2

Webb City’s girls basketball team is still atop the Missouri Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association’s Class 4 state rankings.
The Lady Cardinals are 15–1 entering their trip Friday to Branson.
In the Class 5 poll, Nixa is No. 2. The Lady Eagles are 15–2.
On the boys side, Branson is No. 4 and Nixa No. 6 in the Class 5 rankings. The Pirates are 17–2 and the Eagles 17–1.
Luko among nation’s top shooters (Girls basketball alumni)

Nixa grad Ashley Luko is ranked second in NAIA D-I in 3-point field-goal percentage. Despite a recent 2-of-8 slump beyond the arc, the Evangel guard is 33-of-64 on her 3-point attempts (.515).
Luko is averaging 13.8 points a game.
Other COC alumni faring well at the college level include:
— Nixa grad Morgan Smith is averaging 16.8 points a game as a freshman forward at College of the Ozarks.
Smith, who also played at Marshfield, is shooting 52 percent from the field and has posted double-figure scoring in 17 of 19 games.
— Bolivar grad Casey Garrison tops Misosuri State with a 19.1 scoring average, 109 assists and an average of 36.4 minutes played.
— Marshfield grad Lacey Boshe has had norms of 9.9 points and 3.8 rebounds for the Lady Bears.
— Hollister grad Breanna Daniels is averaging 12.1 points and 4.2 rebounds a game as a sophomore forward at Truman State.
— Marshfield grad Kayla Messick tops C of O with 53 assists and has hit 25 3-pointers while averaging 5.3 points a game.
— Willard grad Megan Jewell has also hit 25 treys for C of O while averaging 5.4 points a game.

Bade’s explosion lifts Catholic (Girls basketball roundup)

SPRINGFIELD — Bekah Bade broke loose for 27 second-half points en route to a 33-point performance in Springfield Catholic’s 64–58 win over Seymour on Monday.
Bade netted 19 points in the third quarter alone. She finished with eight 3-pointers.
Danielle Lampe added 13 points for the Lady Irish.
Elsewhere on Monday:
— Nixa downed Marshfield 65–28.
The Lady ‘Jays fell to 11–7, while the Lady Eagles improved to 16–2.
Marshfield returns to Central Ozark Conference Small Schools Division play on Tuesday by meeting Buffalo.

SPRINGFIELD — Bekah Bade scored 22 points to help Springfield Catholic past Buffalo 53–36 in Central Ozark Conference Small Schools Division action on Thursday.
The Lady Irish were also led by Danielle Lampe’s 10 points.
Buffalo received 12 points apiece from Brittany Glasscock and Jordan Davidson.
Elsewhere on Thursday:
— Hollister downed Reeds Spring 57–41.
The Lady Tigers’ Lainie Bishop netted 20 points, while Cassandra Kimbrough added a dozen and JaeLynn Ellison had 11.
Reeds Spring’s Tawni Freeman scored a game-high 22 points.
— Marshfield bounced back from a loss to Bolivar to beat Rogersville 50–39.

The Lady Irish improved to 11–8 overall and 3–0 in league action.
Elsewhere on Friday:
— Branson beat up on Neosho 58–24.
Michaela Dapprich had a game-high 13 points for the Lady Pirates, while Kristina Dodd and Ruby Stevens both had 11 and Cailynn Hayter nine. Dodd was given a game ball afterward in recognition of reaching the 1,000-point milestone earlier in the week against Willard.

Lady Tigers awarded first and second seeds

CARTHAGE — The Willard and Carthage girls basketball teams were named the first and second seeds in Class Class 5 District 12, to be played Feb. 22–27 at Carthage.
The rest of the seeds include No. 3 Springfield Hillcrest, No. 4 Springfield Central, No. 5 Joplin and No. 6 Neosho.
Willard and Carthage will receive fist-round byes. First-round games on Feb. 23 will include Central-Joplin and Neosho-Hillcrest.
On the boys side, COC members Neosho and Carthage were tabbed the four and five seeds and will meet each other in a first-round game on Feb. 22.
The rest of the seeds are No. 1 Hillcrest, No. 2 Joplin, No. 3 Willard and No. 6 Central. Willard and Central will also face off on Feb. 22.

Lady Pirates tie record for wins (Girls basketball roundup)

CARTHAGE — Branson matched its school record for single-season wins by gaining its 19th win on Tuesday, a 50–46 triumph over Carthage.
The Lady Pirates (19−6 overall and 4–3 in the Central Ozark Conference Large Schools Division) join three other Branson teams with 19 wins.
Michaela Dapprich topped the winners with 23 points, while Ruby Stevens had nine and Kristina Dodd eight.
Elsewhere on Tuesday:
— Marshfield downed Hollister 57–47 in a Central Ozark Conference Small Schools Division game.
The Lady Jays upped their overall record to 14–9 and their conference mark to 4–2.

Lady Wildcats drop first-round game (Girls basketball roundup)

CARTHAGE — Neosho’s season came to an end as the Lady Wildcats fell to Springfield Hillcrest 61–31 in a Class 5 District 12 first-round game on Tuesday.
Shea Wyatt’s nine points topped Neosho.
In the district’s other opening-round game, Springfield Central edged Joplin 65–57.
In semifinal play on Thursday, top-seeded Willard will meet Central and second-seeded Carthage will play Hillcrest.

FAIR GROVE — Springfield Catholic made it to the semifinal round in Class 3 District 11 action by downing fellow Central Ozark Conference Small Schools Division foe Hollister 55–44 in a first-round game on Saturday.
The Lady Irish received 18 points from Danielle Lampe and 16 from Bekah Bade.
Hollister’s Cassandra Kimbrough scored 19 points.
Catholic will meet Fair Grove in a semifinal on Wednesday.

Lady Cardinals’ Jaeger COC Large Schools Division Player of the Year

Webb City junior Kaitlin Jaeger has been named the Central Ozark Conference Large Schools Division Player of the Year in a vote of league coaches.
Jaeger is joined on the All-COC First-Team by teammates Hailey Roderique and Kyndal Clark, along with Nixa’s Bethany Funderburke and Emily Walker.
The Second-Team is made up of Willard’s Sammie Gathercole, Nixa’s Randa Raper, Republic’s Kayce Duvall, Ozark’s Melanie Williams and Branson’s Kristina Dodd.
Honorable mention recognition goes to Branson’s Cailynn Hayter, Webb City’s Scharenda Campbell, Carthage’s Kaylee Morgan and Ozark’s Hannah Gomez.
